NBC offer provokes NABET

Broadcast union honchos lashed out Monday at NBC's latest contract proposals as a "sweeping assault" on key provisions of the current pact, which expires March 31.

Officials at the National Assn. of Broadcast Employees Technicians/Communications Workers of America said the web's "devastating" proposals target nearly every major area of the contract, including seniority, daily hires, jurisdiction and work rules.

NABET-CWA responded to the web's batch of "new concepts and takeaways" just weeks before the San Diego contract talks Feb. 8.

More than 2,200 broadcast employees will be affected by the new contract.

NABET-CWA prexy John S. Clark, who will rep the union in the talks, said in a statement that NBC's revision package adversely affects 128 sections of the master agreement.

Clark said that the contract's bottom line meant a loss of more NABET-CWA repped jobs and the creation of oppressive working conditions.

The union and web exchanged proposals Jan. 10.

NBC spokeswoman Deborah Thomas said the proposals were the first pitch in the "give and take" of reaching a satisfactory agreement. "This is only the initial stage of the talks," Thomas said.

NABET-CWA exex said that if an accord isn't reached by the start of May sweeps on April 28, the union will call for a nationwide boycott of the web by TV viewers.
