'NYPD' scores DGA hat trick
"NYPD Blue" helmers Charles Haid, Gregory Hoblit and EricLaneuville all nabbed slots in the nighttime dramatic series category for Steven Bochco's gritty urban cop drama.
DGA spokesman Chuck Warn said it was the first time that a TV series drew three nods in a single category. Only "Moonlighting" in 1985 grabbed three nominations in one year, two in comedy and one in nighttime drama.
DGA prexy Gene Reynolds and awards chairman Jack Shea announced the nominations in the categories of dramatic special, comedy, nighttime dramatic series, musical variety, daytime serial and documentary/actuality at a press conference Monday.
Winners, voted on by DGA members, will be named alongside feature film awardees at simultaneous dinners March 5 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in L.A. and the Supper Club in Gotham.
"Late Show With David Letterman" director Hal Gurnee will do his best to avoid a Buffalo Bills impersonation. With his seventh straight nod with no wins in the musical variety category, he holds the record of most noms without a victory in that category.
James Burrows earned his 12th career DGA nom in the comedy category for an episode of "Frasier." A winner of two DGA awards (1983 and 1990 for "Cheers"), Burrows ties Don Mischer for second place on the list of most nominated TV helmers. Only former DGA prexy George Schaefer has won more.
Nominees in the dramatic special category will convene for a symposium Saturday, Feb. 26, in DGA Theater No. 1.
