Pic Adademy unspoolings knocked out

With the dawn-to-dusk curfew in effect throughout Los Angeles Monday and Tuesday nights, studios and production companies were unable to hold their scheduled Oscar pre-nomination screenings, which will not resume until the curfew is lifted, possibly within the next few days.

It is doubtful that any of the canceled screenings will be re-scheduled, and a spokesman said the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences will not change the Jan. 27 date when the nominations polls close prior to the Feb. 9 announcement of Oscar noms.

The spokesman pointed out that because this year's March 23 ceremonies are already a week earlier than last year's, there is no possibility to extend the voting time to make up for the missed screenings.

In addition to the studios' canceled screenings, the Academy canceled last night's scheduled board of governors meeting because of water damage due to burst pipes at the Acad's Wilshire Blvd. headquarters.

At that meeting, a decision was supposed to be announced regarding the future of the short films branch and whether or not short films would be eliminated from Oscar competition. According to the Acad, the meet has been reskedded for next Tuesday.

While there was water damage on several floors of the Wilshire site, there was no damage to the Samuel Goldwyn theater.

There was no damage at the Academy's Margaret Herrick Library on La Cienega, which houses valuable movie artifacts such as scripts and photo stills, as well as other research material.
