Dibie wins Camera prexy

George Spiro Dibie, a five-time Emmy-winning director of photography, was re-elected as prexy of Camera Local 659 of the IATSE by a 3-1 margin, the union announced Thursday.

He said the main goal of his administration would be to work with the Intl. Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees to increase jobs.

"Hopefully, we can work together with the IA and other Hollywood locals to build a nationwide organizing campaign," he said. "We need to expand our job base by taking away the producers' non-IA alternative."

Dibie called on the other locals to help capture the job market in low-budget features, cable, syndication and interactive TV.

Haskell Wexler first veepee

Several other executive officers won unopposed in the vote tally of the 3,400 member union, including two-time Oscar-winner Haskell Wexler as first veep, Michael O'Shea as second veep, Peter Hapke as secretary-treasurer, and Deborah Weis as recording secretary.

The IA's recently negotiated contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers is awaiting a Feb. 3 vote for final ratification. Dibie said with that out of the way, "we've got to use the next three years to increase our leverage with the producers."
