Bruce Beresford has been tapped to direct the Village Roadshow Pictures feature "A Voice Cries Out," the company said Thursday.
"Voice" is based on the true story of a group of Australian, Dutch and British women held by the Japanese in a prisoner-of-war camp during WWII.
In order to survive the inhuman conditions and preserve hope, the women secretly formed a vocal orchestra.
Lensing on the pic is expected to begin in Oz and several Asian locations around June. No talent has been cast, but VRP is expecting that to happen shortly.
Beresford, who will also rewrite the screenplay with writers Martin Meader and David Giles, recently wrapped helming Morgan Creek's "Silent Fall." Among his other films are "Driving Miss Daisy,""Breaker Morant" and "Tender Mercies."
Village Roadshow recently completed the Paul Hogan/Cuba Gooding Jr. Western "Lightning Jack," which Savoy Pictures will roll out in the U.S. March 25.
