Sanctuary wedding comedy & CD-ROM

Betting that comedy and interactivity will make for a profitable mix, Sanctuary Woods, a leading developer of entertainment and educational CD-ROM titles, has entered into separate agreements with cabler Comedy Central and comedian Dennis Miller to develop interactive titles.

Under the agreement with Comedy Central, Sanctuary Woods and the all-comedy network will work together to create, script and design interactive comedy products. While Sanctuary Woods will lead the development of the titles, Comedy Central will provide content, including the cabler's brand name and writing/producing assistance, in addition to talent and promotional services.

The pact allows Sanctuary Woods to license Comedy Central-owned properties for use in interactive media. This could include such Comedy Central programs as "Pepsi's A-list,""Stand-up, Stand-up,""Comic Justice" and "Two Drink Minimum."

The agreement with Miller-Pickering Syndication, an interactive media development company co-owned by Miller, calls for Sanctuary Woods to co-develop, publish and distribute interactive titles in collaboration with the former "Saturday Night Live" star.

According to Sanctuary Woods president Scott Walchek, the agreement with Miller and subsequent product introductions will help launch the company's new "I-laugh" brand of interactive comedy products, which target adult audiences and encompass a wide range of interactive entertainment products that use humor instead of action or adventure.

"The interactive software market has been the domain of young boys playing adventure games for quite a while," Walchek said. "We want to move beyond this focus to draw others into the interactive market. Comedy has a wide appeal and it's a logical vehicle both for existing interactive software users and to attract new audiences."

The first two titles developed under the agreement with Miller, "Dennis Miller: That's News to Me" and "Dennis Miller: That's Geek to Me," will ship early this year. An additional comedy product from this joint effort will be introduced later in 1994.
