NBC adds 'Whitney' to lineup
The show will replace the gameshows "Caesars Challenge" and "Concentration," effective Jan. 17. A deal with NBC has been discussed since Warner Bros. announced that it would pull the series from syndication (Daily Variety, Nov. 24 ).
The issue-oriented talkshow performed reasonably well in syndication ratings-wise, but ran into a buzzsaw when it came to corralling advertisers, in part due to the show's subject matter. Because of its nature, the series aired primarily in latenight slots, with some daytime clearances.
Whitney was an NBC News correspondent in Latin America and reporter for "Entertainment Tonight" before launching her talkshow, first locally and then in syndication.
The series will continue to tape in New York, with Cathy Chermol as exec producer for Time-Warner's Telepictures Prods.
