Herwitz ankles D.C.'s WTTG to start a TV station group
Herwitz has been the WTTG chieftain since 1989.
He joined Fox in 1986 after a stint as legal assistant to former Federal Communications Commission chairman Mark Fowler.
WTTG has consistently run the top-rated 10 p.m. newscast in the nation during Herwitz' reign. Herwitz also helped develop "America's Most Wanted," and launch "Fox Morning News" for D.C. audiences.
Recently, however, the station has been the subject of controversy. Former WTTG news director Joe Robinowitz resigned the day after a Robinowitz memo surfaced recommending that the station consult with right-wing activists before hiring newsroom personnel.
Herwitz, who said he will soon announce the equity participants in his new venture, declined to specify whether his new company will focus on network affiliates or independent TV stations as acquisition targets. "We're not bound by anything," he said. "We believe in the future of over-the-air television."
