Acad awards $ 85,000 in grants to 16
The target group this year was women and film, officials said. Eight of the funded projects are from among those proposals.
Grants of $ 10,000 each were made to the Columbia University School of the Arts to help establish a center in the film division and to the North Carolina School of the Arts, Winston-Salem.
A grant of $ 6,000 was made to the Writers Workshop, Los Angeles, to help develop, print and distribute information about workshop programs.
Four $ 5,000 grants were made to the National Student Film Institute/Los Angeles to fund an Academy film workshop for teachers from kindergarten through high school; Image Film/Video Center, Atlanta, to fund a program to encourage women ages 13-18 to become filmmakers; Media Network, New York City, to help fund a basic screenwriting workshop series for women and Visual Communications, Los Angeles, to edit and publish an anthology focused on Asian Pacific American women in independent film.
Six grants of $ 4,500 each were made to 911 Media Arts Center, Seattle, to create a support network to connect emerging media makers to professional women; the Community Film Workshop, Chicago, to develop an initiative to mentor women beginning careers in the film industry; Midwest Media Artists Access Center, St. Paul, Minn., to help provide women filmmakers access to film equipment needed to produce a project; UCLA Film and Television Archive, to publish a monograph incorporating papers presented at their upcoming Scary Women symposium; Women in Film, Los Angeles, to sponsor a daylong minifestival of Film Finishing Fund award-winning projects by women; and Women Make Movies, New York City, to assist in expanding its Women of Color in Media database project.
Three grants of $ 4,000 were made to the film center of the Art Institute of Chicago to help fund the public film and lecture series "Latin American and Caribbean Cinema: By, For and About Women"; Cineaste magazine to help fund a special supplement on "Sound and Music in the Movies"; and Empowerment Project, Chapel Hill, N.C.
