Proyas vanishes from 'Casper' pic

Director Alex Proyas has exited as director of the Amblin/Universal feature "Casper," with Amblin execs citing the director's creative differences over the screenplay.

The film, a mix of live-action and three-dimensional computer graphics animation, is based on the vintage "Casper the Friendly Ghost" cartoon.

It is in pre-production and dueto go before the cameras early next year. Last week, Amblin officials said they planned to keep to that schedule, although a new director has not yet been chosen.

Christina Ricci, who plays Wednesday in "Addams Family Values," has been cast to star as the little girl who is the only one to see the ghost (Daily Variety, Oct. 22).

Proyas is best known for his work as a director of commercials and musicvideos. He also was helming "The Crow," the film in which Brandon Lee was starring when he was killed.
