Matsushita denies selling stake in MCA

MCA owner Matsushita Electrical Industrial Co. Ltd. denied reports that it would sell part of the studio to Tele-Communications Inc. topper John Malone.

A spokesman told Reuters the company "has no intention of selling any stake in MCA," which it bought in 1990 for more than $ 6 billion. MCA owns Universal Pictures and Universal Television.

The spokesman dismissed a New York Times report quoting insiders as saying Matsushita execs have met with Malone. TCI is in the process of merging with Bell Atlantic, and its Liberty Media unit owns 22% of Paramount suitor QVC Network.

Matsushita stock was up $ 4 to $ 135 Thursday.

TCI did not return telephone calls and MCA prexy Sid Sheinberg declined comment.
