Pac-Asia mart preview
It is the second of four TV and film programming markets that aim to connect sellers with buyers in developing countries, following a successful market last year in Paris.
Encik Abdul Latif Nasir, project director for Happening Prods. Sdo. Bhd., the local organizer, has already tubthumped the event in visits to Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.
The event is a unique opportunity offered to Pacific-Asian stations with low budgets to acquire rights for a broad selection of discounted feature films, cartoons, series, docus, gameshows and other programming.
New revenue channels
These are the products of established international companies and the event gives them new revenue channels and the chance to promote their vast libraries and catalogues.
Asked how the event came about, Encik Latif said companies in European countries hit by recession and political turbulence have been forced to turn their attention to other untapped markets, particularly in the Asian and Pacific areas.
Among major companies that have confirmed their attendance are U.S. firms such as MCA Universal, 20th Century Fox and Turner Intl.; NHK Television of Japan; Ironstar Co. of Canada; Darofilms of Monaco; and Telson International of Spain.
The managing director of the National Film Institute of India, Melati Tambay Vaidya, will be among the international film personalities attending.
Discop Asia '93 is sponsored by Malaysia Airlines, FINAS and endorsed by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Tourism Promotion Board.
