Humane Society picks doc

Org names 'Cages' grant winner

The Humane Society of the United States has tapped "Cages of Shame" by Martin Guinness as its sixth winner of the Animal Content in Entertainment Documentary Grant.

The society announced the winner of the $20,000 grant on Thursday, noting that it had received almost 90 submissions from over 20 countries.

"Cages of Shame" is a feature-length documentary about a mission to rescue moon bears from a bile farm in China through advocate Jill Robinson.

"Cages of Shame" is narrated by Peter Coyote and is in the final stages of post-production.

The society awarded second place to "The Eyes of Thailand," directed by Windy Borman, which focuses on the work of a veterinarian dedicated to rehabilitating wild elephants injured by landmines.

Previous recipients of the grant have included "The Elephant in the Living Room," a documentary about exotic pet ownership by Michael Webber, and "One Lucky Elephant," directed by Lisa Leeman.
