Skillset, Pinewood launch training academy

Orgs team up with Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College

U.K. training agency Skillset has teamed up with Pinewood Studios and Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College to launch a training academy.

The Skillset Craft and Technical Skills Academy will provide training in nine disciplines -- camera, lighting, hair and make-up, editing, animation, runners, grips, wardrobe and sound -- for industry newcomers and established crew members.

"For us to make films that people want to see we have to ensure that the quality of our filmmaking remains world class -- that we are keeping up with technology, harnessing new skills, while building on the successes of recent years," said Iain Smith, producer and chairman of the academy at Tuesday's launch at the British Film Institute.

He was joined by BFI director Amanda Nevill and a crowd of industry professionals and Skillset students.

According to Skillset, more than half the film production workforce believe they require more training to move on in their careers and remain competitive.

Skillset is jointly funded by the government and the entertainment biz.
