Summit firms date, title for Seth Rogen dramedy

Studio calls cancer tale '50/50,' sets Sept. 30 bow

Summit Entertainment has firmed a date for its Seth Rogen dramedy "50/50" with plans to release the film wide on Sept. 30.

"50/50," which until now had gone untitled after filmmakers scrapped other such monikers as "Live With It" and "I'm With Cancer," is directed by Jonathan Levine ("The Wackness") from a script by Will Reiser, who based the film on his own experience battling cancer.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt toplines opposite Rogen as the twentysomething who's been diagnosed with cancer and decides to use humor in helping fight against the disease. Pic co-stars Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard and Anjelica Houston.

"50/50" was developed at Mandate Pictures, with Rogen and Evan Goldberg producing. Reiser exec produced, along with Mandate prexy Nathan Kahane. Ben Karlin also produced.

The early fall berth is typical for adult-driven fare, positioning the film for potential awards consideration, as well as counterprogramming against other more serious-minded offerings. Also opening wide on that date are Universal's suspense thriller "Dream House," 20th Century Fox's laffer "What's Your Number?" and Shakespearean period drama "Anonymous," from Sony.
