Gene Shalit is leaving NBC's "Today" show after 40 years. "It's enough already," Shalit said in a statement.

The TV personality, known principally for his film reviews and interviews with celebs, announced that he would be pursuing his career in other fields, including publishing, radio, Web ventures and commercials.

Besides "Today," Shalit's career has included posts at Look magazine, where he worked as senior film critic; Ladies Home Journal; and NBC Radio.

Shalit joined "Today" in 1970, working as a regular contributor until he replaced Joe Garagiola as a panelist in 1973.

Shalit's last day will be Thursday, when the show will include a retrospective spanning his lengthy career.
