The battle of the Midway may be heading to the bigscreen with Warner Bros. buying a pitch from Bruce C. Mc-Kenna ("The Pacific") and setting up the 3D project with Akiva Goldsman at Weed Road Pictures.
McKenna, the creator and co-exec producer on HBO's "The Pacific," will pen the script.
The 1942 battle, which took place six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, resulted in a decisive victory by the U.S. naval forces after its codebreakers were able to determine the date and location of the Japanese attack. Universal's 1976 film "Midway," starring Charlton Heston and Henry Fonda, grossed more than $40 million domestically.
"The Pacific," co-produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, has been nominated for 24 Emmys, including a scripting nod for McKenna with co-writer Robert Schenkkan on the final episode. McKenna wrote three episodes of the HBO series "Band of Brothers," exec produced by Spielberg and Hanks, and won a WGA award for the "Bastogne" segment.
