Nickelodeon’s spinoff 'The Legend of Korra' follows the character 70 years after the cabler’s original 'The Last Airbender' tale.

Nickelodeon has given the greenlight for new toon series "The Legend of Korra," a spinoff of the cabler's "Avatar: The Last Airbender" skein.

From "Avatar" creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, "Korra" will take place 70 years after the events of "Avatar" with rebellious teenager Korra at the center of the storyline.

"Avatar" ran for three seasons on Nick and was especially popular with boys.

Cabler is hoping "Korra" will be more femme-friendly. Series, to be produced at Nick's animation studios in Burbank, is scheduled to premiere in 2011.

"Mike and Bryan have imagined a compelling new story inspired by the Airbender mythology that they so brilliantly crafted when the TV series began," Nick toon prexy Brown Johnson said. "This new avatar is not only a girl, but also hot-headed, independent and ready to take on the world."
