Chris Rock has optioned English-language remake rights to France's "La premiere etoile" (The First Star).
Rock will write the remake's screenplay and produce.
A comedy with a broad social point, 2009's "La premiere etoile" turns on a black family who leave their working-class hood to take to the ski slopes. That's considered a social faux pas in the stuffy resort.
"Etoile" is directed by Lucien Jean-Baptiste, who also took a starring role. It was produced by Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar and Pierre Kubel at Paris' Vendredi Films.
Gallic auds thought the pic a hoot: Released in March by Mars Distribution, "Etoile" grossed 9.7 million ($13.8 million) in France, making it the 10th highest grossing French film of 2009.
Rock's "Good Hair" scored a WGA docu nom Monday. The DVD will be released Feb. 16. He also stars in Neil LaBute's "Death at a Funeral," bowing through Screen Gems in April, and co-stars with Adam Sandler in "Grown Ups," which Sony releases in June.
