Studio Ghibli adapts 'The Borrowers'

Yonebayashi to direct animated feature

TOKYO -- Studio Ghibli has announced its latest feature toon, to be based on Mary Norton's classic fantasy book "The Borrowers."

Karigurashi no Arrietty" (Arrietty Borrows Everything) is being directed by studio animator Hiromasa Yonebayashi under the supervision of Ghibli maestro Hayao Miyazaki. Release is skedded for next summer, with Toho distribbing.

Published in 1952, "The Borrowers" centers on a family of people just a few inches tall who hide from the world and live by "borrowing" from normal-sized humans.

The last Ghibli feature, "Ponyo," directed by Miyazaki, earned ¥15.5 billion ($176 million) at the Japanese box office following its July 2008 bow.
