Show was Letts' Rialto follow-up to his Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner "August: Osage County," but unlike that play, "Donuts" never gained much momentum at the box office.
In its 10 weeks so far on the Gotham boards, weekly sales topped out at around $350,000, and attendance has traced a fairly steady downward curve. For the week ended Nov. 22, show logged sales of $222,868 and played to 44% capacity.
Production opened Oct. 1 to generally upbeat notices, although they did not confer the must-see status on the show that reviews did for "August" when it opened in 2007.
Like "August," "Donuts" originated at the Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago and came to the Rialto with its original cast mostly intact. "August" producers Jeffrey Richards ("Hair"), Jean Doumanian and Jerry Frankel reunited for "Donuts," and the show founds its Broadway home at the Music Box Theater, where "August" ran for 20 months.
Helmed by Tina Landau, "Donuts" stars Michael McKean as the owner of a donut shop in a run-down part of the Chicago. Co-star Jon Michael Hill has attracted attention for his well-reviewed perf as the shop owner's young employee.
Along with Richards, Doumanian and Frankel, "Donuts" producing team includes Awaken Entertainment, Debra Black, Chase Mishkin, Karmichelle Prods./Robert G. Bartner, Carole & Barry Kaye/Irv Welzer, Andrew Asnes, Rebecca Gold, Kathleen K.
