Jochen Alexander Freydank, who won an Oscar this year for his short film, "Spielzeugland" (Toyland), will direct "The Burrow," about a being who hides from the world inside a vast labyrinth.
Pic, one of 15 backed by regional subsidy org Filmstiftung NRW, stars Dominique Horwitz, Nicolette Krebitz, Ken Duken and Robert Stadlober. Askania Media, Mephisto Film, ProSaar and SR/Arte are producing with E225,000 ($337,000) in Filmstiftung support.
Also in the works is Isabel Kleefeld's adaptation of "Fame," interweaving several stories revolving around the theme of communication. Cologne-based Little Shark Entertainment and Terz Film are producing.
The subsidy org also is backing "Camp 14 - Total Control Zone," Marc Wies' documentary about Shin Dong Huyk, who was born and raised in a North Korean gulag, where he saw his mother hanged and his brother shot before escaping to South Korea in his mid 20s.
Produced by Cologne-based Engstfeld Film and regional pubcasters BR and WDR, the doc received more than $260,000 in subsidy coin.
The Filmstiftung also approved nearly $600,000 for Tom Tykwer's relationship drama "Drei" (Three), which has already nabbed nearly $1.8 million in subsidy coin from regional funder Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and the German Federal Film Board.
The Medienboard, meanwhile, is backing Berlin-based Rommel Film's adaptation of "Wetlands," one of 23 projects it is supporting.
