The starry original cast of hit play "God of Carnage" ($1,107,302) -- James Gandolfini, Marcia Gay Harden, Hope Davis and Jeff Daniels -- went out with a bang. Thesps' final frame pushed sales past $1 million. It fell just short of the house record set during the 2006 run of Julia Roberts starrer "Three Days of Rain."
Star-driven plays in general did well last week, with Jude Law topliner "Hamlet" ($947,180) logging its best tally so far and Daniel Craig-Hugh Jackman vehicle "A Steady Rain" ($1,202,161) continuing to report the highest average paid admission on the Rialto ($138.74).
Broadway cume climbed about $525,000 to just shy of $21 million for 32 shows on the boards.
The few dips reported were mostly unremarkable. "Mamma Mia!" ($811,600) slipped by a solid chunk of change, but it hardly seems worrying given the tuner's longevity.
The sag at "Shrek the Musical" ($581,794), however, indicates the DreamWorks tuner still has trouble holding on to auds despite its approaching closing date.
The just-opened "Ragtime" ($466,489) was up a bit in its heavily comped opening week. Previewing tuner "Fela!" ($264,145 for seven perfs) performed modestly, but addition of Jay-Z, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith as producers may goose sales.
Only new show to join the fray last week was "Irving Berlin's White Christmas," logging $334,409 for five perfs but poised to pick up as the holiday draws nearer.
