Studio-released genre pics appear to be beneficiaries of the wider road. Sci-fi ("Avatar," "District 9," "Star Trek" ), comedy ("The Hangover," "Julie and Julia," "It's Complicated") and animation ("Up," "Fantastic Mr. Fox") are all being buzzed about as realistic Contenders.
Or will the Power of 10 give a leg up to the smaller gems and foreign-language films? While indie "The Hurt Locker" could be destined for some Oscar love, could smaller-scaled Sundance prizewinner "An Education," helmed by Danish director Lone Scherfig, make the cut? Or could Cannes standouts, such as Germany's foreign-language film submission "The White Ribbon," find a bigger berth?

We've come up with 21 Contenders that could be headed for at least two major nominations (picture, director, acting and screenplay categories) while also naming a few of the other promising pics in the mix this year. Additionally, we've broken down the films and complexities at work in Oscar's animation, documentary, foreign-language and vfx categories.
