It's Complicated

Release date: Dec. 25

Distrib: Universal

The mere presence of Meryl Streep makes a film an Oscar contender, and it doesn't seem too far-fetched to imagine that the theme of this Nancy Meyers comedy -- middle-aged sexuality -- will strike a chord among the Academy's ranks. Torn between her ex-husband (Alec Baldwin) and a sensitive architect (Steve Martin) -- incidentally, the thesps are also this year's Oscar hosts -- Streep's character is poised to be that unheard-of thing in a mainstream studio movie: a woman in her 50s who's a sex object. That alone will earn the as-yet-unscreened film good will -- although, if history's any gauge, it might not be enough to overcome Meyers' penchant for lighter-weight tales that the Acad could find easily dismissable. (She was nominated in 1981 for co-scripting "Private Benjamin.") Nonetheless, noms could come in the writing and acting categories. Producers mix includes Oscar winner Scott Rudin ("No Country for Old Men"), which adds a certain gravitas to the mix.
