Award, recognizing a person's outstanding contribution to the entertainment field, is decided by a vote of the board of directors of the HFPA. Vera Farmiga announced the result of the vote at a morning press conference Thursday.
Scorsese has rceived two Golden Globe Awards for best director for a motion picture for "The Departed" and "Gangs of New York." He's received four other noms for best director ("Casino," "Age of Innocence," "Goodfellas" and "Raging Bull). He and Nicolas Pileggi also received a nom for best screenplay for "Raging Bull."
Scorsese is next in theaters with Leonardo DiCaprio horror-thriller "Shutter Island," his first feature film since "The Departed," for which he won the Oscar for best director. "Departed" also won the Oscar for best pic.
"Shutter Island" opens Feb. 19. Among Scorsese's other projects, he's exec producer on the upcoming HBO drama series "Boardwalk Empire."
Past recipients of the Cecile B. DeMille award include "Steven Spielberg (2009), Warren Beatty (2007) and Anthony Hopkins (2006).
The Jan. 17 Golden Globes ceremony will be hosted by Ricky Gervais. Noms will be announced at 5:00 a.m. on Dec.15.
