The ice comes from the river near the famous ice hotel in Jukkasjarvi, and festival honoree Susan Sarandon is scheduled to present one of her films on the frozen screen.
U.S. films pepper the main lineup, with "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" opening the fest, "Up in the Air" closing and "The Road" unspooling midway through.
Latter is also one the films being presented in the special section called Spotlight: Apocalypse -- The Time Is Now featuring films such as Korean disaster film "Haeundae," animated "9," France's "Happy End," dolphin doc "The Cove" and "Earth Days." Besides a "green carpet" premiere for "The Cove," there will be a seminar called Time Is Now, turning on the theme of natural disasters
and how these are dealt with in the arts.
The fest, which loves using new technology, this year offers ducats via mobile phones. Ticketbuyers simply show ushers the cell phone's display when entering a theater.
This year's fest is dedicated to late thesp David Carradine, who earned a spot in Swedish hearts when he starred in Ingmar Bergman's "The Serpent's Egg" and in the 1980s acted in a series of extreme low-budget action pics helmed by Mats Helge Olsson.
