Myers is currently an associate artist with the Sydney-based legit troupe. His appointment reps a generational shift for the group; he made his directing debut just last year for Sydney Theater Company with "Frankenstein," a production widely praised for bringing fresh vision to the oft-told tale.
The new Company B topper, who's 30, has been in the theater biz since graduating from Australia's National Institute of Dramatic Art in 2000. He has worked with former STC topper Robyn Nevin and director Barry Kosky, chalking up a broad range of experience including work for Opera Australia.
Myers' appointment drew praise from STC co-chief Cate Blanchett, who programmed his tyro helming gig and also worked with the designer on STC's staging of "A Streetcar Named Desire," which plays the Brooklyn Academy of Music Nov. 27-Dec. 20. Blanchett plays Blanche DuBois in the production.
"Company B Belvoir couldn't have made a more exciting decision for the Australian theater community," said Blanchett. "Ralph combines intelligence, theater craft and good humor — all requisites to lead this wonderful company."
Armfield, who last season directed "Exit the King" on Broadway starring Geoffrey Rush, departs Company B after 16 years at the helm. He said Myers showed wisdom beyond his years and strong leadership, also praising his storytelling skills.
Armfield added that he believes Myers' talent lies in spotting good directors and actors and that he will direct more in time.
Armfield will leave Company B at the end of 2010; his swan song will be a revival of Gogol's "Diary of a Madman," also with Rush. That production was first staged by the director and star in 1989.
