Comedy writer Sultan Pepper dies

'Ben Stiller' scripter passed unexpectedly at 47

Emmy-winning comedy writer Sultan Pepper, who launched her 17-year career on "The Ben Stiller Show," died unexpectedly Oct. 20 in Murrieta. She was 47.

Pepper won her 1993 Emmy for writing in a variety or music program for "The Ben Stiller Show." She was the only woman on a writing team that included Ben Stiller, Judd Apatow and David Cross.

After her success on Stiller, Pepper wrote on several other shows in the '90s, including "The Stephanie Miller Show." She also wrote for the interactive children's show "Crashbox" and the animated series "CatDog." Pepper also worked as a writer-producer on "Don't Forget Your Toothbrush" and for reality series such as "Blind Date" and "Street Smarts."

In 2002, she began a one-year development deal at Sony/Columbia TriStar, where she worked as a writer and producer on several projects including "The Rerun Show," "Pyramid" and "Shipmates."

Following this, Pepper was a writer on "MadTV" for two seasons, during which the writing team was nominated consecutively, in 2004 and 2005, for WGA Awards.

Pepper was a graduate of UCLA and spent a semester at Oxford U., where she interned with the BBC.

She is survived by her parents.
