IFC plans a fall 2010 release for the film, a shortened version of the three-part miniseries of the same name. IFC sister company Sundance Channel will show the miniseries in the spring.
The mini and film center on Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, better known as Carlos the Jackal for masterminding a wave of terror attacks in Europe and the Middle East in the '70s and '80s. "Carlos" stars Edgar Ramirez ("Che") with a cast from France, Germany, Japan and the Middle East.
The mini, set to air on Canal Plus early next year, was shot in Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Lebanon and Morocco. It's produced by Studio Canal, Film en Stock topper Daniel Leconte and Jens Meuer in association with Sundance Channel.
Assayas' credits include "Clean," "Demonlover" and "Les Destinees sentimentales." He had never worked in TV before.
Studio Canal negotiated the deal at the American Film Market.
