The channels have jointly picked up the basic cable rights to the off-network syndicated run of HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm."
Under terms of the deal, TV Guide Network will start running "Curb" repeats in February. TV Land would then get the rights after that -- in February 2013, if the show ends at seven seasons; later, if "Curb" produces more seasons.
Tribune had earlier purchased the off-net broadcast runs of "Curb" and another HBO sitcom, "Entourage," for its stable of 17 stations, as well as for superstation WGN America.
TV Guide Network's run
will begin before WGN America, which gets the show in September 2010.
"Curb" reps the latest pickup as TV Guide Network continues to evolve itself into more of a general entertainment channel under its new owners, Lionsgate and One Equity Partners. The channel earlier this summer landed the off-network rights to "Ugly Betty."
"Acquiring a series of this caliber truly underscores our commitment to defining TV Guide Network as a destination for some of the best shows on television." said TV Guide Network prexy Ryan O'Hara.
Both TV Guide Network and TV Land also will be given certain broadband, wireless and video-on-demand rights to "Curb" as part of the deal.
As is the case with most HBO series that move on to syndication off the pay channel, a certain amount of editing may be necessary to pass muster with advertisers.
TV Land prexy Larry W. Jones said he believed the irreverent "Curb" would "fit perfectly with our strategy of delivering programming that is geared toward the life stage and attitudes of people in their 40s."
Larry David stars as a version of himself in "Curb," alongside Cheryl Hines, Jeff Garlin and Susie Essman. David, Garlin, Gavin Polone, Alec Berg, David Mandel, Jeff Schaffer, Tim Gibbons and Erin O'Malley are exec producers.
