The current Broadway revival of "Hamlet" toplined by Jude Law has recouped its $2.5 million capitalization costs, according to producers.
Star-driven show, a transfer of the recent West End staging from the Donmar Warehouse, has raked in robust sales since it began Broadway perfs Sept. 12. Auds have never quite packed the house -- the highest weekly attendance figure posted so far is around 90% -- but average ticket price has been unusually high, indicating that the combination of Law and the melancholy Dane is something people are willing to shell out for.
Last week "Hamlet" posted receipts of $751,526 and played to 83% capacity while average ticket price was nearly $97. (One week the average price paid topped $106.) So far the Broadway production has grossed about $5.3 million.
Donmar a.d. Michael Grandage ("Frost/Nixon") helms the staging, which also stars Geraldine James, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Kevin R. McNally, among others.
American producer Arielle Tepper Madover, who has a first-look deal with the Donmar, produced the Broadway incarnation of "Hamlet" (as well as recent transfers of Donmar shows "Mary Stuart" and "Frost/Nixon"). Donmar Warehouse, Matthew Byam Shaw, Scott M. Delman, Stephanie P. McClelland, Neal Street Prods./Carl Moellenberg, Ruth Hendel/Barbara Whitman and Philip Morgaman/Frankie J. Grande round out the list of producers.
Limited run of "Hamlet" ends Dec. 6.
