German director Werner Herzog, whose films from the past 40 years are being screened at the fest, will give a master class in which he discusses his diverse cinematic career, which includes both documentary and fiction work.
Serbian director Goran Paskaljevic will talk about the advantages of low-budget productions, drawing on his own experience as an independent filmmaker navigating his way through political and social strife.
Mexican production designer Eugenio Caballero, who won an Oscar for Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth” and recently worked on Jim Jarmusch’s “The Limits of Control,” will discuss the challenges and opportunities of production design in the digital era.
Other master classes will be given by French composer Alexandre Desplat, British producer Jeremy Thomas, Vienna Academy of Fine Arts professor Marina Grzinic, screenwriter Tony Grisoni (“Tideland,” “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”) and Jim Gianopulos, co-chairman of Fox Filmed Entertainment.
Other events at the festival include roundtable discussions on using film fests to promote environmental action, independent cinema in the Philippines and the international system of film awards.
There are also exhibitions on the work of Herzog and del Toro and a range of artistic and musical events including a performance by musician and actress Jane Birkin.
The fest runs Nov. 13-22.
