Rotterdam festival unveils first titles

Competition includes Russell's 'Let Each One'

'Let Each One Go Where He May'

“Let Each One Go Where He May,” from Chicago-based helmer Ben Russell, will compete at the 39th Rotterdam Film Festival, which unspools Jan. 27-Feb. 7.

Russell’s debut feature follows two brothers from Suriname who silently retrace the route taken by their ancestors escaping Dutch slavery 300 years before. Pic preemed at the Toronto Film Festival in September.

Also traveling to Rotterdam from Toronto will be Pedro Gonzalez-Rubio’s “To the Sea.” Mexican helmer’s sophomore pic portrays the relationship between a fisherman and his son. Mantarraya Prods. produced; MK2 handles international sales.

A third competing film will be Thai helmer Anocha Suwichakornpong’s “Mundane History.” Drama concerns a paralyzed boy and the male nurse hired to take care of him. Pic bowed internationally at the Pusan Film Festival in South Korea.

Competition jury will include Argentine filmmaker Lucrecia Martel, French actress Jeanne Balibar and Philip Cheah, director of the Singapore Film Festival. Two further names will be added in due course.
