ABC picks up J.D. Roth project

Weight-loss show tentatively titled 'Obese'

ABC is getting into the weight-loss game, picking up six episodes of a show from producer J.D. Roth.

Project, which has the working title "Obese," centers on morbidly overweight individuals who are looking to lose a great deal of weight. Show will follow the participants over a lengthy period as they attempt to shed those pounds.

Roth's 3 Ball Entertainment, which is a producer on NBC's "The Biggest Loser," is behind the project.

"Obese" enters a TV landscape crowded with projects about weight loss and overweight individuals. And it's not expected to launch for as long as a year, when the trend may have already reached its saturation point.

Other recent shows to have dealt with the morbidly obese include Style's "Ruby." TLC recently picked up "One Big Happy Family," which follows a North Carolina brood in which all four members weigh in at more than 300 pounds.
