Show is produced by Darren Bagert ("Guys and Dolls," "Company"), who is also at work on bringing a play adaptation of "Kiss of the Spider Woman" to the boards.
Cromer last year staged a production of "Picnic," the 1953 Pulitzer-winner by William Inge, at Writers' Theater in Chicago, where the show earned largely glowing reviews when it bowed in September 2008.
Helmer has been a hot property in Gotham recently, following lauded Off Broadway productions of "The Adding Machine" and "Our Town." He's directing "The Neil Simon Plays" on the Rialto and next spring will direct Lincoln Center Theater's Off Broadway production of Andrew Bovell's "When the Rain Stops Falling."
"Picnic," about a handsome young stranger who disrupts the lives of two sisters in a small Kansas town, has not been seen on the Rialto since a 1994 Roundabout Theater Company revival that starred Ashley Judd. Ensemble of the show's 1953 preem included Kim Stanley and Paul Newman (in his Main Stem debut).
Cast and theater for the revival remain to be announced.
