Morricone concert at Bowl cancelled

No reason was given in the announcement

Sunday's Ennio Morricone concert at the Hollywood Bowl has been abruptly cancelled.

No reason was given in the announcement Thursday by a spokesman for the producers, Andrew Hewitt & Bill Silva Presents. Speculation has centered on the possibility that the 80-year-old Italian maestro was unable to travel for reasons of health or work.

Advance ticket sales are said to have exceeded 5,000; the Bowl seats 17,000. The show, titled "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," was to have featured the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and the Angeles Choir performing many of Morricone's famous film themes, including "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly," "The Mission" and "Once Upon a Time in America."

Musicians were informed Wednesday night. Rehearsals were to have started Thursday, with additional rehearsals slated for Friday and Sunday. The last-minute cancellation means that the L.A. musicians must be paid for all four rehearsals as well as the show.

The performance would have marked Morricone's West Coast conducting debut. He performed at New York's Radio City Music Hall in February 2007, shortly before he received an honorary Academy Award for his "contributions to the art of film music."
