Jennifer Fox is producing the project, which has been developed by BBC Films' Christine Langan and Paula Jalfon.
Tilda Swinton is set to star as a mother forced to re-examine her relationship with her son after he goes on a murderous rampage two days before his 16th birthday.
Independent is co-producing, co-financing and selling all rights for the project, based on the best-selling novel by Lionel Shriver.
Filming is set to begin in the U.S. early next year.
