David Rambo to play with 'Reagan'

'CSI' scribe writing stage show based on President

Producers David Permut and Mark Travis have hired playwright and "CSI" scribe David Rambo to pen the book for "Reagan," a one-man stage show about actor-turned-president Ronald Reagan.

The producers intend to film the show for theatrical transfer, a strategy they used on the 1975 pic "Give 'Em Hell Harry," a one-man stage show about President Harry Truman, and on 1978's "Bully: An Adventure With Teddy Roosevelt," another single-hander. Both starred James Whitmore.

Peter Hunt, who helmed the earlier plays, returns to direct "Reagan."

Rambo's play, "The Lady With All the Answers," just opened off-Broadway with Judith Ivey playing advice columnist Dear Abby.

Permut and Travis had originally set the Reagan play to be written by Lionel Chetwynd (Daily Variety, Sept. 10, 2008), when a 10-city run was expected this fall. It has taken longer to raise the curtain, but they say they will be ready next year.

The producers, who also used the stage-to-screen strategy on 1979's "Richard Pryor: Live in Concert," have enlisted the cooperation of the Reagan family as consultants. The producers said they are in talks with a major actor to play Reagan, but wanted to keep their candidate in the shadows until he's set.
