SAG's national board voted Sunday to suspend Cassel's membership as a result of his being found guilty by an internal trial board of "conduct unbecoming a member" for sexual harassment of staff members at a guild townhall meeting in May.
The move means Cassel has lost his national board seat following an eight-year run on the board. The Hollywood Division board will name his replacement at its next meeting.
Cassel wasn't immediately available for comment Monday. But his attorney, James Talbott, said thesp was considering his options including filing for "financial core" status, under which a member resigns and withholds dues spent by SAG on political activities but can still work on union jobs.
SAG spokeswoman Pamela Greenwalt had no comment about the suspension, citing the guild's policy of not discussing disciplinary matters.
Cassel played a spoiler role in the guild's presidential election last month, drawing 18% of the vote while Ken Howard received 48% and Anne-Marie Johnson got 33%. Cassel asserted during the recent campaign that the allegations are untrue. His name remained on the ballot after SAG's national executive committee delayed a ruling on his appeal and deferred the issue to the national board.
