McG had been attached to direct in 2007 from a Michael Arndt script about a neurotic father who must face childhood monsters, but the studio's keeping the latest logline under wraps for the latest version of the script by Brad Copeland ("Yogi Bear"). Warners is looking to go into production as early as next summer.
"Monster Squad" first emerged in 2000, when Warner purchased Brian Lynch's spec "Nightcrawlers," centered on the adventures of an international coalition of kids whose job it is to combat a variety of monsters found under beds.
MGM tapped Mitchell in June to direct its live-action fantasy "Once Upon a Time," with Darryl Taja producing a tale of Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty married to their handsome princes, only to see their spouses go missing.
Mitchell's other credits include "Sky High" and "Surviving Christmas."
