Guilds extend industrial, educational contract

New contract expires April 30, 2011

Leaders of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists have approved an 18-month extension of their contracts for industrial and educational films.

The contracts, which were set to expire Oct. 31, will be effective Nov. 1 and expire on April 30, 2011.

The unions, in a joint announcement Thursday, said the agreement includes a .5% increase in employer contributions to the SAG and AFTRA pension and health plans. They also said that the pact doesn't cover commercials.

"These contracts are critical to our members across the country and extending them gives us the opportunity to strategize ways to increase covered work under the agreements," said SAG president Ken Howard.

The extension agreement was negotiated under the same terms that SAG and AFTRA used in negotiating the commercials contract earlier this year. AFTRA had split from joint negotiations with SAG in early 2008 following a dispute over jurisdiction and negotiated a separate primetime deal before the AFL-CIO brokered a peace between the performers unions.

The industrial-educational pacts cover performers rendering on-camera and voiceover services in sales programs, educational and training videos, informational and promotional messages seen in stores and video along with other projects exhibited outside of the traditional broadcast arena.
