Ymagis will put up most of the $5 million investment, recouping over 10 years.
“Our first motivation when we equipped six of our theaters with digital projectors was to show films in stereo 3D,” said MK2 topper Nathanael Karmitz. “Now I’m concerned by the challenges faced by distributors, the skyrocketing P&A and the fact that so many films either don’t have access to — or can’t stay long enough in —theaters.”
According to Karmitz, even distribs that release films on a few copies will be able to save between 5% and 10% on technical fees.
MK2 also plans on continuing to show alternative content, including live concerts or sports events, for special occasions. Ymagis has already signed pacts with Paramount, Disney, Fox and Universal.
