German net enjoys foreign, local success

'CSI,' 'House' mix it up with in-house action dramas

By ED MEZA

RTL Television's "CSI" franchise and "House" remain the biggest U.S. imports in Germany, but a number of local shows have helped cement RTL's lead over rivals in viewers 14-49.

In addition to its popular and long-running Autobahn-cop actioner "Alarm fuer Cobra 11," the broadcaster also enjoyed a muscular new hit this summer with "Lasko -- Die Faust Gottes" (Lasko: The Fist of God), about a former elite soldier who fights for justice as a kickass man of the cloth and member of the secret Vatican order Pugnus Dei.

Produced by Hermann Joha's Cologne-based Action Concept (the folks behind "Alarm fuer Cobra 11"), "Lasko" became one of Germany's highest-rated new series, achieving an average share of 17.2 in the key 14-49 demo and a total of 3.37 million viewers.

New licensed series on RTL this fall include BBC's hit fantasy skein "Merlin" and "Knight Rider," which will air Saturday afternoons. RTL will also introduce new shows from newly inked multiyear output deal with NBC Universal that includes free TV rights to films and series.

Rival Sat.1 has improved its performance and is banking on increasing its market share with new shows like "NCIS: Los Angeles." Original show "NCIS" remains one of the network's most popular.

"Harper's Island" got off to a strong start in its Wednesday night slot on Sat.1 affiliate ProSieben in August. Other new series on ProSieben include "Chuck," which replaced the poorly received "90210" on Saturday afternoons, and "Lipstick Jungle," which begins airing Wednesday nights in September.

TOP SHOWS

1. "Der Dicke" (ARD)

2. "In aller freundschaft" (ARD)

3."Ein fall fuer zwei" (ZDF)
