Fitzgerald, most recently TV prexy at Josephson Entertainment ("Bones"), will oversee daily operations of the two departments for AMC and report to senior veep of original programming, production and digital content Joel Stillerman.
With critically acclaimed series "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad" securely in place, Fitzgerald's initial emphasis will be on upcoming series, starting with "Rubicon," which is scheduled to enter the episode writing phase next week with a goal of being on the air in 2010.
Fitzgerald fills the post vacated in February by Christina Wayne, who was key in shepherding the cabler's entry into scripted series (Daily Variety, Feb. 6).
"I think they want to grow and have more series on the air, but they have to be the right ones," Fitzgerald told Daily Variety. "The kinds of things they do are in my wheelhouse, tastewise."
Previously, Fitzgerald ran creative at Darren Star Prods. after having spent 10 years at Brillstein-Grey, culminating in a position as co-head of Brad Grey Television.
She also was West Coast original programming veep at HBO, where she supervised the development and production of "The Sopranos" and is credited with shepherding the casting of James Gandolfini in the lead role.
"I think (AMC) does have that flavor of what HBO was like when I was starting out there," Fitzgerald said. "That can-do spirit without really having a lot of (resources). They're lean and mean over here."
Stillerman said Fitzgerald's track record of working with established and new talent is among the many positives she brings to AMC.
"Her talent for identifying and shaping great stories, her managerial experience and the fact that she is so well respected in the industry will make her a tremendous addition," he said.
