Unspooling Nov. 21-29, the fest will screen 10 pics in competition, all from Asia and the Middle East, including Hana Makhmalbaf's "Green Days" (Iran), Omri Givon's "Seven Minutes in Heaven" (Israel) and Pen-ek Ratanaruang's "Nymph" (Thailand). The only local pic in the section is Go Shibata's "Doman seman (horikawa nakatachiuri)."
Chairing the jury will be helmer Yoichi Sai, assisted by Chinese helmer Lu Ye, Toronto fest Asian pic programmer Giovanna Fulvi, Cinematheque Francaise program director Jean-Francois Rauger and Taiwanese thesp Chen Shiang-chyi.
Among the eight pics in the Special Screenings section are Tsai Ming-ling's "Face" (France/Taiwan) and Park Chan-wook's "Thirst" (Korea), as well as two U.S. pics, Courtney Hunt's "Frozen River" and Bradley Rust Gray's "The Exploding Girl," and two Japanese pics, Toshiaki Toyoda's "The Blood of Rebirth" and Tatsushi Omori's "A Crowd of Three."
Toyoda, a much-heralded up-and-comer for such pics as "Pornostar," "9 Souls" and "Hanging Garden," dropped out of sight after receiving a three-year suspended sentence in 2005 for drug possession. His pic is based on a Kabuki play about a man who undergoes a near-death experience after ingesting poison.
In cooperation with Shochiku, Filmex will also feature a retro section devoted to the work of eight helmers from the 1930s.
