'Idol' tough guy keeps it real

Cowell not interested in niche programming

When reality TV needs a reality check, the one person people turn to, hands-down, is Simon Cowell.

"If you want a shortcut to fame," comments the infamously cutthroat "American Idol" and "Britain's Got Talent" judge, "you're going to have to put up with a bit of criticism."

It's this no-nonsense approach that Cowell considers his main contribution to the reality TV genre as an on-air personality and executive producer/co-creator of such shows as "America's Got Talent" and "American Inventor." Keeping it real, he proclaims, is what really counts.

"You have to be very careful that you don't manipulate the process so it becomes fake," says Cowell. "It's important to get people when they're in a place where they're acting like they are in real life."

Cowell's business philosophy aims for an all-inclusive viewership.

"It's not about fragmentation," he pronounces. "I don't like the idea of marginalizing things. What I like is the idea of as many people as possible watching the show."
