"I'm very attracted to visuals," says the NYU film school grad with a penchant for Paul Almond's "Seven Up!" and other docudrama classics. " 'The Hills,' for example, was modeled on Michael Mann's 'Heat,' and '8th and Ocean' was based on (Steven) Soderbergh's handheld style. The first episode of 'Made' was modeled on 'Election' in terms of storytelling cadence."
Central to DiSanto's creative process when developing new projects are three fundamental elements: "Ideas, characters and originality of execution."
When a show has successfully nailed a particular "vibe" -- say, the seminal series "The Real World"--DiSanto makes certain that its defining style is never repeated.
Whether it's "going cinema verite" with "16 and Pregnant" or "the filmic feel" of "Laguna Beach," DiSanto searches for one key aesthetic that will push a great idea over the top.
"It's all about characters, story and the hook," DiSanto says of MTV's reality TV triumphs. "It's about pulling the rug out from under ourselves and, when it comes to each show, always forcing the reinvention."
