Seacrest swims in reality TV

'Idol' duties could take back seat to new producing role

Ryan Seacrest has proven he and reality television are a match made in entertainment heaven.

Judging from his multiyear megadeals with Comcast and 19 Entertainment, Seacrest's abilities as a host of "American Idol" and "E! News" are undeniable. But his aptitude for the genre doesn't end when the cameras are turned off.

His empire includes producing reality shows such as "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," "Denise Richards: It's Complicated," "Momma's Boys," "Bromance" and most recently "Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami."

Soon, British chef Jamie Oliver will join Seacrest's reality-star clientele.

"We have been able to re-establish ownership in the (sub)genre," says Seacrest, who adds that reality programming can work, with or without celebs.

"It doesn't necessarily depend on the caliber of (the) name," he says. "It depends on the story. You can have somebody very famous and put cameras in their life, and it's just not interesting. I try to (find) the stories that are interesting to watch but are also relatable on universal levels."
