Costanzo burst on the fest circuit with his debut "Private," which took the 2004 Locarno Golden Leopard and many other prizes, followed by "In Memory of Myself," which went to Berlin. Costanzo will start shooting in October on "Solitude," which is mostly set in Turin and Piedmont.
Paolo Giordano's novel, which turns on trauma, love and math, won Italy's top literary prize, the Premio Strega. It has since been published in 25 languages. Doubleday published "Solitude" in the U.S. in June.
Rohrwacher most recently co-starred with Tilda Swinton in Luca Guadagnino's "I am Love," which unspools here in Horizons. In "Solitude," she will play a young woman dealing with an emotional, as well as physical, scar dating back to her childhood.
Pic is being produced by Mario Gianani's Offside, the recently launched Rome shingle that was behind Marco Bellocchio's "Vincere." Medusa is financing "Solitude" and will release the pic in Italy.
France's Les Films Des Tournelle is also on board as co-financer, while Gallic distrib Le Pact will distribute "Solitude" in France.
